While looking for the next piece for the satire section, I came across this bizarre news:
“Authorities in a northern Malaysian city (Kota Baru) have forbidden Muslim women from wearing bright lipstick and noisy high-heeled shoes.”
Apparently, the authorities believe that this will safeguard the morals and dignity of the women, as well as thwart rape. Even more incredible than the ban is its wording, which goes as follows:
“Muslim women are forbidden to wear thick make-up, like bright colored lipstick and high-heeled shoes that give a tapping sound. For those who insist on wearing high heel shoes, they can do so but with rubber heels.”
Maybe I’m just ignorant, but I don’t see why rubber heels and tapping sounds make a difference. Heck, I don’t even know how this ban as a whole will result in a positive outcome - from the facts that Malaysia is a multi-religious country, and that the Buddhists, Christians and Hindus who also belong to the religious make up of the country do not face restrictions on clothing or practices, it can easily be propagated that this is an oppressive move against Muslim women.
Then again, I have no right to criticize the city’s decision, I can only hope that their leaders’ IQ increases over time.
P.S. - This is filed under ‘Blog’, because it is not satire, it’s real news.

Stupid… Can I be a feminist just for once and say men obviously took this decision?
Thanks!
BTW, the snapshots for avatars are a WP plugin, I answered your comment on my blog.

Plugin isn’t working for me, but I don’t mind since I have hardcoded this stuff in my template now.
Edit: Fixed it, this theme was using it’s own avatar system so I made it use the default function and it works
And I agree with you on the men’s decision thing. This is just really bizarre.

In clarification, the Municipal Council for Kota Baru has said that “the circular was not a compulsory guideline for Muslim female staff to follow but to encourage them to observe the Islamic dress code.”
Even so, the MPKB has been previously criticised for making it compulsory for Muslim women to wear headscarves at commercial, trade and tourism premises.
